Most people waste it with "whatever you think looks best."
AskUserQuestion is a real tool, not a stall.
It sits in the tools reference alongside Edit and Bash, and needs no permission prompt — asking you something is the one action that's always safe. You pick an option and the session continues with your decision baked in.
Scope creep wears a question's clothes.
"Full homepage — add nav, a footer, plus the work grid" isn't a clarification, it's a proposal to triple the project. Nothing dishonest — Claude offers the full menu. But every option you accept is work you've commissioned.
"Whatever you think" is not an answer.
"You're the expert — make it premium" is respectful delegation.
It hands direction, scope, and budget to a model optimizing "premium" with no constraints. Whatever lands, you authorized all of it — you can't call any of it wrong.

If the plan doesn't echo your boundary, it isn't in the work.
The revised plan should repeat your "do not" back to you. Restate it before going further — answers narrow the work; they never silently widen it.
